What We Are
We are basically a grass and cake outfit. We have no farm ground, or irrigation. All that is raised on the ranch is grass and wild meadow hay and usually not enough of that. Our cows have to be efficient, easy-keeping forage converters. Any supplemental feed has to be purchased so we have to keep a handle on mature cow size.
We firmly believe in performance testing and have turned in data on our cowherd to their respective breed organizations for many generations. A.I. has been utilized since 1970 with an eye on balanced trait selection, not just focusing on certain traits. We have tried to combine calving ease {not necessarily light birth weights}, growth, maternal into a package that is structurally correct and trouble free. This means many things such as longevity, ease of handling, and a animal having" necessity traits "{good udder with small teats, ability to withstand adverse conditions and one that works easily when handled}
We offer 2 breeds that complement each other very well. Red Angus for maternal influence, fleshing ability and carcass quality traits. Limousin for calving ease, muscle, growth, efficiency and carcass yield. We have been long time advocates of crossbreeding and have found that Limousin and Red Angus combined hit the target in all the important areas.
Winter supplemental protein- Range cake is fed during the winter to
help balance the protein requirements of the cowherd while on winter range.
Winter Range- The cowherd is wintered on native range as long as possible
to help cut down on annual feed costs.
Bulls on pasture- Our fall born calves are weaned in March and summered
on grass till October when they are brought in for supplement feeding
through the winter.
