Yesterday, Rep Don Shoultz and eleven other Iowa lawmakers introduced legislation that would require all firearms transfers at gun shows held on state property to be subject to a criminal background check of the buyer.

Could a felon, domestic abuser, minor, or any person prohibited by law from possessing a firearm, buy guns at gun shows held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds?

"Yes, Very Easily"
SKS Bought at FairgroundsThis SKS semiautomatic assault rifle was purchased from an unlicensed seller at a recent gun show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The buyer gave the seller $250 in cash and the seller handed over the gun to the buyer – no background check, no record of sale, no questions asked. The seller didn’t even ask to see a photo ID to verify that the buyer was an Iowa resident. (Note: Under federal law, it is unlawful for an individual to sell a firearm to a person from another state.)

Iowa lawmakers should not allow the Iowa State Fairgrounds to be used as a venue for illegal gun transfers.

Wednesday, February 2 at 9:00 am, Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence and Rep. Shoultz will hold a press conference in the First Floor Rotunda calling on the Iowa legislature to enact legislation that would require a background check on all firearms sales at gun shows held on state property (HF 161). We invite everyone to attend and learn more about how this important legislation could keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, and minors.

Note: IPGV’s Legislative Series will resume next week.
