Save the Assault Weapons Ban!

The federal ban on military-style, semiautomatic firearms will end in September of this year (2004) unless Congress and the President take action.  (read more about assault weapons here)

Here's what you can do:

1.
Call both of your Senators and your representative and encourage them to support the McCarthy-Conyers bill in the House and the Lautenberg bill in the Senate.  Ask your representative to be a co-sponsor of the bill.   (Find your Senators/Congressmen here)

2.
Sign the Iowa Assault Weapons Resolution, below.  Then, take it to: social events, groups, and friends.  Submit the Resolution to your local city council for ratification.  Submit the Resolution to your state and local political party for inclusion in the party platform.  The resolution and a sign-up sheet can be downloaded from the IPGV website: resolution and sign-up sheet.

3.  Write a letter to the editor on your support for an effective assault weapons ban.  See our assault weapons ban page for more information.

Fight Gun Industry Immunity!

Tell your Senators to oppose S.659 in the Senate, which would grant the gun industry blanket immunity from civil lawsuits filed by cities and individuals seeking to recover the costs of gun violence.  The House has already passed HR 1036, the companion bill to S.659.

Support Regulation of Secondary Sales in Iowa

Bills have been introduced in the Iowa House and Senate to regulate the secondary sale of firearms by requiring a Brady Background check on all gun sales.

The bills are: Senate File 163, introduced by Senators Hatch, Dvorsky, Bolkcom, and Holveck and House File 207, introduced by Representatives Greimann and Ford.

Tell your Iowa Senators and Representatives, as well as the Iowa Senate and House leadership and the Governor, to support SF 163 and HF 207 to regulate secondary gun sales in Iowa.

Iowa Resolution on Assault Weapons

WHEREAS, the current federal assault weapons ban is due to expire on September 13, 2004; and

WHEREAS, gun manufacturers openly discuss and display their ability to circumvent the current law.

THEREFORE, be it resolved that we, the undersigned, call on the 108th Congress to pass and President Bush to sign legislation that reauthorizes, strengthens, and improves the assault weapons ban so that these weapons of war are effectively banned for civilian use.
